Project No.9
Berckelman Cct Residence
South Guildford,
Western Australia
A Compact, Sustainable, Light-Filled Home Perfect for Young Growing Families.
The Derek offers an affordable and compact home designed for a young family looking to upsize from an apartment. Situated in historic South Guildford, this modern home utilizes a long-house plan, allowing for a linear courtyard garden along the north and east sides. This garden is ideal for growing vegetables, outdoor entertaining, and children's play. The narrow plan ensures excellent access to natural light and promotes cross ventilation throughout the home.
The home's design features a simple gable form with timber cladding, creating a striking and welcoming presence. Raking ceilings and exposed trusses enhance the sense of space within the open-plan living areas, while prefabricated trusses and roof framing streamline the building process. Burnished concrete floors, ponded for seven days to ensure a high-quality finish, complement the exposed red face brickwork, which transitions from the exterior to the interior, adding to the home's traditional-industrial character.
A separate pavilion houses the garage and storage at the rear, recedes visually and offers secondary access from the laneway. Large sliding doors connect the living spaces to the outdoor garden, facilitating a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Sustainability features, such as solar panels, a heat pump, and eaves overhangs for shading, further enhance the home's energy efficiency and appeal to environmentally conscious families.
